5 Places for Virginia Trout Fishing

Mossy Creek

Mossy Creek attracts visitors from around the country, and even the world, for its picturesque and accessible Virginia trout fishing experience. It is known for its large trout and its three-mile stretch of fly-fishing-only waters best suited for the experienced angler.

The Lexington County Reservoir

The Lexington City Reservoir in Rockbridge County offers 22 acres of great tour fishing. The lake is stocked with brook trout annually, many of which measure in around 9 to 13 inches in length. This is a true backcountry Virginia trout fishing experience as you will have to take a rather lengthy hiking through United States Forest Service land to get back to the reservoir, where primitive camping is allowed.

Mills Creek and Coles Run Reservoirs

Located in the Pedlar Ranger District of the George Washington National Forest of Augusta County, Mills Creek and Coles Run offer a combined 30 acres of Virginia trout fishing. Both reservoirs are stocked annually with brook trout, which are typically between 10 and 12 inches long, making for a fulfilling catch. There are no facilities on these lakes so you must head out prepared to walk about half a mile to Coles Run and 1.5 miles to Mills Creek from Forest Service Road 42.

Lake Moomaw

One of the most sizable reservoirs for Virginia trout fishing, Lake Moomaw is a flood-controlled lake that was completed in Alleghany and Bath Counties in 1981, resulting in 2,530 acres with 43 miles of shoreline. The lake is stocked annually with a variety of trout species, offering a diverse fishing experience. There are many recreation areas around the lake that provide boat launches and full facilities for a great day of family fun.

The Rapidan

The Rapidan is known as one of the best trout streams in the Shenandoah Valley, particularly for brook trout. And, for history buffs, it was also fished by President Herbert Hoover. Along with the trout, you’ll even find some odd scenery like old stone fireplaces built as backdrops for press photo ops.
