No trip to the Shenandoah Valley would be complete without a visit to the Shenandoah Valley Caverns. Guests staying at By the Side of the Road will appreciate their close proximity to one of this region’s most stunning attractions. There is so much to see and do here but the caverns are an absolute must for any visitor to the area.

Shenandoah Valley Caverns

Nestled amongst the majestic scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Shenandoah Valley Caverns are a sight to behold. Delighting visitors since 1922, an elevator makes exploring them a possibility for almost anyone. In fact, the Shenandoah Valley Caverns are the only such caverns in Virginia with elevator access to its underground treasure. Seventeen rooms offer glimpses into another dimension full of awe-inspiring nature. Spanning the length of a mile, and sitting approximately 60 feet below the entrance to the elevator, a series of gravel paths lead visitors on a wonderful discovery of geological gems, some formed from years of dripping water one drop of water at a time. An even temperature is maintained year-round, usually around 56 degrees according to published accounts, which means it’s a comfortable destination regardless of the season or the weather. Why not plan a visit this summer when it’s hot outside and cool off with cool formations in the caverns? Children under 6 are free while those ranging from 7 to age 14 will be charged $10 to gain entry. Adult tickets are $23 while seniors age 62 and up receive a reduced rate of $20 for admittance. Discounts are available for those serving the military, as well as for members of AAA, so be sure to mention these affiliations if either of them are applicable to you. Now through June 15th, tours run until 5:15pm. Beginning June 16th and lasting until Labor Day, visitors will have an extra hour each day to enjoy the attraction with tours ending at 6:15pm instead. A good pair of walking shoes and light jacket are recommended as it can be cool and damp deep in the caverns. Expect to spend about an hour inside navigating the rooms and marveling at the attraction.
