Family Fun in the Valley: A JMU Parents Getaway

Your Gateway to Harrisonburg's Charms

The charming city of Harrisonburg is Virginia’s first culinary district, and home to one of Virginia’s top universities, James Madison University (JMU). By the Side of the Road Inn & Cottages offers guests a peaceful stay conveniently located within mere minutes from the heart of downtown Harrisonburg and JMU. Recently, Stacey and Jason, a couple from Williamsburg whose children are JMU students, stayed with us in our Magnolia Cottage. Their weekend getaway included taking their children to dinner downtown at Jimmy Madison’s as well as tailgating and attending the JMU vs. GA Southern home football game.

Your Journey Begins with Privacy & Comfort

Stacey and Jason came looking for a comfortable quaint stay at By the Side of the Road. Upon arriving, they were greeted by a contactless check-in, a touch of convenience that set the tone for their stay. With a sense of privacy and seclusion, they felt at-ease in their home away from home. “It's a feeling of a lot of privacy, doing it that way. It's nice to meet people, but I always like to be able to just do a keyless entry on places I stay at and just go right in on my schedule”, Stacey shared.

Once settled, they ventured out to explore the property's diligently maintained grounds. Here, serenity and charm coexist, where our picturesque bridge and hidden nature trail reveal a side of Harrisonburg that often escapes notice. Stacey and Jason took the opportunity to take a romantic walk in this beautiful scenery. Stacey said: “I think By the Side of the Road is great for JMU parents that are coming to visit their students. It's great for couples: the cottages are designed to be a couple's getaway. And it's great if they have siblings, because there's lodging that has space for kids”.

Dining in Downtown Harrisonburg: Jimmy Madison's & More

After a romantic walk in the hidden gem of Harrisonburg, Stacey and Jason were ready to spend some quality time with their children over a delicious meal in Virginia’s first culinary district. Their restaurant of choice was Jimmy Madison's, a multi-level eatery celebrated for its diverse homestyle southern cuisine, extensive whiskey bar and soulful music. It was the perfect spot for a family dinner, only 10 minutes away from By the Side of the Road. However, downtown Harrisonburg boasts an array of dining establishments within walking distance, so this is not the only great spot so close! Stacey and Jason’s favorite spots downtown include Billy Jack’s Shack, Jack Brown’s and Clementine Cafe. “Jack Brown’s is a great burger place, and Clementine is super fun and they have a lovely patio right off the back”, Stacey elaborated.

A Relaxing Evening: Convenience Beyond Compare

Following an enriching family dinner, the couple returned to their cottage for a leisurely evening. They were looking forward to a restful night before they went to a JMU game tailgate the next day, and our Magnolia Cottage did not disappoint. Everything in the cottage was thoughtfully arranged, ensuring that their stay was not only comfortable, but also entirely enjoyable. That evening, Stacey chose to pamper herself with a soothing bath, while Jason found a cozy spot to enjoy some sports on TV!

The Magnolia Cottage, is a spacious 500 square-foot suite that features a lofty 16-foot ceiling, creating an open and airy atmosphere. The charming cottage features a dual-sided, seasonal gas-log fireplace, perfect for creating a cozy ambiance during your visit. It also boasts a relaxing bathtub with continuous warm water jets. Additionally, the cottage features a cozy sitting area with two reclining chairs, a mini kitchen with a wet bar, coffee maker, complimentary coffee, tea, and snacks, as well as a Roku TV and a dining table for two. This combination of features creates a comfortable and inviting space for your stay.

Tailgating at JMU: A High Energy Get-Together before the Game

After a relaxing evening, Stacey and Jason woke up ready to embark on a new day filled with excitement! With great convenience, Jason brewed a pot of coffee for the both of them right in their room, before they headed out to join their daughter for a tailgate brunch before the JMU football game. Stacey and Jason go to many sporting events, but they told us that JMU football is one of their favorites, and that tailgating at JMU is a one-of-a-kind experience. “The tailgates are so much fun, because I get to hang out with my daughter and her housemates, and it's a great time for the parents to connect with each other. There's usually cornhole and great food and music. It's a really good time to relax and enjoy getting in touch with each other before the game”, Stacey expressed. Like the drive to downtown Harrisonburg, it only took them 10 minutes to arrive at JMU.
